You’re getting ready to build your deck but you’re not sure if either PVC or composite decking is better? You’re not the only one.
Many homeowners ask us what’s the difference between the two, and many others think PVC and composite are one and the same material.
In fact, while these two decking materials have many things in common, there are also lots of things that make them different.
In this guide, we’ll discuss the PVC and composite decking differences, and what would be the best pick for your upcoming deck building project in Snohomish or surrounding areas.
What Is PVC Decking
PVC decking is a form of decking that is made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC.
This type of decking is known for being durable and long-lasting, as well as resistant to fading, staining, and scratching. PVC deck boards are also a good option for those who are looking for low-maintenance decking material, as it does not require painting or staining as some other materials do.
PVC decking is made up of 100% plastic. It’s a less expensive option than composite decking, but it’s also less durable and weather-resistant. PVC decking is available in a variety of colors and can be textured to look like wood decking and wood fibers.
Disadvantages Of PVC Decking
One disadvantage of PVC decking is that it can be expensive compared to some other types of decking materials. It can also be difficult to find, as it is not as commonly used as some other materials.
Another downside to PVC decking is that it is not as eco-friendly as some other options, such as composite decking. PVC is made from petroleum products, which can be damaging to the environment.
PVC decking can also be susceptible to mold and mildew if it is not cleaned regularly.
Advantages Of PVC Decking
One major advantage of PVC decking is that it is very durable and long-lasting. It is also resistant to fading, staining, and scratching, making it a good option for those who are looking for low-maintenance decking material. PVC decking is also a good option for those who want a deck that will last for many years without requiring painting or staining.
Another advantage of PVC decking is that it is easy to install and can be done so by anyone with basic carpentry skills.
PVC decking is also a good option for those who are looking for eco-friendly decking material, as it is made from recycled materials.
What Is Composite Decking
Composite decking is made up of a mix of natural wood and plastic. The wood in the mix can be anything from pine to bamboo, while the plastic can be recycled materials or HDPE. Composite decking is more expensive than PVC decking, but it lasts longer and is more resistant to weathering.
When it comes to deciding between PVC and composite decking, it’s important to consider your budget, the climate where you live, and the look you’re going for.
Disadvantages Of Composite Decking
One disadvantage of composite decking is that it can be expensive compared to some other types of decking materials. It can also be difficult to find, as it is not as commonly used as some other materials.
Here are other downsides of composite decking:
- Another downside is that composite can't be refinished
- Different composite brands will have different warranties
- Composite decking can be difficult to shovel snow from
- Composite can look unnatural
The Best Composite Decking Materials On The Market
Two of the best composite decking materials on the market are Trex and TimberTech decking. Here at Burgess Construction, we’ve used both of these materials and it’s safe to say they’re just as strong as they market themselves to be.
While Trex is a bit more affordable, it lacks a crucial thing that decks in Washington desperately need. As much water protection as possible.
Compared to Trex, TimberTech decking boards have a polymer cap on all sides, giving it higher resistance to water-related issues, like mold, mildew, or rot. In other words, capped decking from TimberTech has a higher quality than Trex.
Trex only covers the top of their boards with a synthetic material, similar to the core of the board. As a result, it’s not exactly the best suited for a humid climate like we see in WA state.
So, What's Your Pick?
If you want a durable deck that will last for years and resists weathering, PVC is a good choice.
If you’re on a tighter budget and you don’t mind re-staining every few years, composite decking is a good option, but make sure you’re getting a quality capped composite decking.
Both PVC and composite decking can resemble the natural look of wood, you’ll just need to choose it carefully.
Conclusion
Both composite and PVC decking are great options for your upcoming deck-building project. In fact, your choice will end up being mostly about looks.
