Materials Cost In Relation To Deck Size

Decks are mostly split into two categories: wood decks and composite decks.

Wood decks

Wood decks are still a popular choice. Homeowners are attracted by the cheaper materials, but also by the natural look that wood gives to your outdoors.

However, wood requires constant sealing and staining, which are additional costs that will pile up in the long run.

Composite decking

Composite decks

Wooden decks are increasingly being replaced by low-maintenance composite decks.

For seniors who no longer want to spend their time and money on maintaining their deck, composite is the best option. In fact, a lot of our work now involves replacing wood decks with composite material.

Let’s see the cost associated with different sizes of composite and wood decks.

Wood Decks

If you’re looking for a sturdy wood decking material, pressure-treated wood is one of the most popular choices.

Pressure treated wood decking cost ranges from $15.00 to $25.00 per square foot for materials, and between $20 to $30 for installation.

Material Square Feet Installed Average Total Cost
Pressure Treated Wood 100 square feet $3,500 to $5,000
Pressure Treated Wood 200 square feet $7,000 to $10,000
Pressure Treated Wood 400 square feet $12,000 to $15,000
Pressure Treated Wood 600 square feet $18,000 to $25,000
Pressure Treated Wood 800 square feet $24,000 to $28,00
Pressure Treated Wood 1,000 square feet $28,000 to $35,000

But if pressure-treated wood is a no-go for you, there are more types of wood that you can get.

Despite the higher cost, hardwoods such as Ipe, Tigerwood, or Teak will give your deck a luxurious and unique look. Like all materials though, they require some level of upkeep to maintain their condition.

Composite Decks

At Burgess Construction, we work with a variety of high-quality composite decking brands. In particular, we love Trex and TimberTech for their unique strengths.

TimberTech is one of our preferred decking suppliers because they have a consistent supply and their delivery is always on time. This predictability helps us to avoid any delays or surprises that could interrupt the smooth progress of our projects.

Although Trex offers more choices for styles and colors, their shipping is often unreliable.

When it comes to finding the perfect decking boards, we recommend TimberTech or Trex for our customers. They provide the best mix of function, form, and price that will meet most needs so you can’t go wrong with either of these options.

They typically cost between $60.00 to $70.00 per square foot. However, depending on your needs and budget, we can choose a different product.

Railings

Railings will most likely be mandatory as per the deck building codes in Bothell. Unless you have a ground-level deck, you’ll need to look into railing materials as well.

Metal railings are currently the safest on the market, and we believe they’ll stay that way for a while. They’re durable and resistant to damage, ensuring your new deck will be safe for you and your family. Plus, metal won’t rot or be damaged by pests.

We’re using Westbury aluminum railings, some of the best options on the market. Metal railing is around $60 per linear foot for materials.

While composite railings may be a decent alternative, we don’t recommend them for the following reasons. For one, TimberTech’s good composite railings have the same price as the best metal railing on the market. In addition, despite being made partly of wood composites, over time they can still get damaged like traditional wood railings.

While quality-wise is nothing compared to aluminum, composite railing has a similar price. The 6-foot-long railing for TimberTech costs around $180.

The least practical railing option is wood. It requires constant maintenance, and even when treated, it begins to decay and wobble, posing a serious risk while you’re on your deck.

The average cost to install wood deck railings is around $20 to $35 per linear foot.

Extra Features

Upgrades and extra features don’t only enhance your deck’s functionality, but they make it look amazing too. In other words, these add-ons are what take your deck from looking drab to appear chic.

Aside from making your deck look more stylish, accessories also make it more functional. For instance, an awning can protect you from the harsh rays of the sun, while anti-slip boards are ideal for pool decks.

Upgrade Average Cost
Awning Between $1,200 and $4,000
Pergola Between $2,500 and $10,000
Drinking Rail As low as $100, but depends on railing material
Deck built-in bench Between $2,000 and $3,000
Deck lighting Between $40 to $300

3 Quick Tips When Budgeting For A Deck Building Project

Here are 3 quick tips to keep in mind when budgeting for your upcoming deck building project.

Many of our clients are drawn to the lower pricing of a wood deck or railing, but they neglect that maintenance is required. Our advice is straightforward: don’t choose the cheapest option, and don’t go for the most expensive one either. We provide decking solutions based on your needs, tastes, and budget.

Make sure you ask questions about everything before agreeing to work with anyone. This includes materials, advantages, disadvantages, processes, contracts, and permits. We love it when our customers are fully committed and want to do things the right way.

No matter the project you undertake, it’s always a great idea to budget a little extra for any unforeseen problems that can arise.

Besides, having some extras on hand is never bad, even if nothing goes wrong with the boards. For example, you can use extra boards to replace or repair your deck when the time comes.
