When you’ll first reach us, we’ll want to know what kind of deck you were thinking of. There are two main types of decks, wood decks, and composite decks. Let’s see some differences:
Wood decks
Although wood decks continue to be a popular choice for homeowners, they come with expensive maintenance costs down the line.
Wood is an appealing material for its cheaper price and natural look, but it demands more time and effort to keep up with other materials.
Composite decks
Composite decks are becoming increasingly popular and for good reason. For our older customers, these decks are perfect as they can no longer keep up with the maintenance of their wooden decks.
In fact, many of our jobs involve replacing wood decks with composite ones as homeowners want to use their decks more than maintain them.

Yellow pine, more commonly known as pressure-treated wood, still remains the most popular type of wood for decks, so we’ll use it as a reference point. Cedar is also a popular decking material, but a bit more expensive.
Pressure treated wood decking cost ranges from $15.00 to $25.00 per square foot for materials, and between $20 to $30 for installation.

However, pressure-treated wood is a soft wood that’s susceptible to rot and pest damage. It requires constant attention and care, so definitely consider that before making your decision. In a humid and wet environment like we have in Washington State, wood decks might not be the best option.
Hardwoods like Ipe, Tigerwood, or Teak are more expensive decking materials, but they’ll sure make your deck look more unique and upscale. Keep in mind that even hardwoods require sealing and staining!
Composite Decks
Composite decks are perfect if you’re sick and tired of sealing, staining, and pressure washing a wood deck. These are low-maintenance decks that only require a pressure wash once a year. It’s true that their cost is higher, but it’ll pay off in the long run, as you won’t spend any more money on sealants.
Here at Burgess Construction, we work with some of the best composite decking brands in the industry. Our favorites are TimberTech and Trex decking due to their accessibility, flexibility, and wide selection of materials they offer.
We prefer getting these materials straight from the shelf, as ordering and waiting for the materials to come can postpone starting your project.
They typically cost between $60.00 to $70.00 per square foot. However, depending on your needs and budget, we can choose a different product.
Railings
Railings are mandatory by law, and for elevated decks, you’ll need something sturdier and more resistant than wood rails.
Metal rails are currently the safest railing on the market, and we believe they’ll stay the best for quite some time. They’re incredibly tough and resistant, guaranteeing your new deck will be safe and secure for you and your family. Plus, metal can’t rot or get damaged by pests.
We’re using Westbury aluminum railings, some of the best options on the market. Metal railing is around $60 per linear foot for materials.
Composite is a great alternative, but there are a few reasons why we don’t suggest it. What usually makes our customers change their minds is the fact that the best TimberTech composite railing has a similar price to a fairly good metal rail. In addition, the composite railing is still made of wood and may be damaged over time.
While quality-wise is nothing compared to aluminum, composite railing has a similar price. The 6-foot-long railing for TimberTech costs around $180.
The least practical railing option is wood. It requires constant maintenance, and even when treated, it begins to decay and wobble, posing a serious risk while you’re on your deck.
The average cost to install wood deck railings is around $20 to $35 per linear foot.
Deck Frame
There are three main things we’ll include here: deck blocks or footings, posts, and the frame itself.
- Deck blocks are usually concrete blocks used to hold the deck post. These are placed on a bed of gravel, and they cost around $15 apiece. A deck footing is poured concrete that'll form a solid surface in the ground, on which the post is placed. It's more expensive but offers a better, clean look. For footings, the most expensive and safe option you can get is the H-pier footings.
- The deck posts are usually 6'x6' grade #1 pressure-treated wood rated with ground contact. These are strong and durable, but not the best option. If you want a real upscale deck, we recommend metal posts. Fortress Building Products offer some of the best metal frames on the market.
- The frame itself is also made of pressure-treated wood, with different hardware like brackets, nails, screws, and so on. Your contractor will usually consult you on these, as each will have its own price. Again, for a really high-end deck, we'd go for a metal frame.
